VANCOUVER, Feb. 22, 2018 /CNW/ - It's hard not to feel the 'buzz' these days when it comes to the British Columbia economy. The province's unemployment rate is expected to remain the lowest in Canada through 2018, as all sectors of the BC economy score strong economic gains. The province is quickly gaining the reputation as the new hub for talent – and employers are going out of their way to attract top talent. The best initiatives were recognized this morning, as BC's Top Employers for 2018 were announced by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project at Mediacorp Canada Inc.
"This year's list reflects the province's highly diversified economy, which is admired across Canada," says Richard Yerema, Managing Editor of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project, which manages the competition. "From natural resources to technology and a vibrant public sector, British Columbia has it all – employers here really have to compete for the best and brightest talent. We spent a lot of time making sure this year's list reflects the strength of the BC economy."
"Along with offering best-in-class benefits tailored to employees' individual needs, many of this year's winners offer a relaxed workplace culture that emphasizes healthy, active lifestyles," says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project. "The rest of the country looks to British Columbia for leadership in this field."
Some notable initiatives the editors highlighted this year:
- City of Vancouver offers a special incentive program ("FitCity") that rewards employees for healthy lifestyle choices, such as walking or cycling to work.
- Employees at the beautiful head office of ACL Services in Vancouver enjoy healthy lunch and snack options, fresh fruit, and a great employee lounge with karaoke, an acoustic guitar, dart boards and even beer kegs from a local craft brewer.
- Outdoor retailer Mountain Equipment Co-op provides a range of excellent financial incentives (including matching RSP contributions and referral bonuses for hiring new employees) – plus attractive staff discounts on a wide selection of outdoor gear.
- As part of their health plan, Oppenheimer Group employees receive a company-paid wellness account so they can take advantage of a range of in-house offerings including on-site subsidized massages, drop-in yoga classes and quarterly wellness workshops.
Now in its 13th year, BC's Top Employers is a special designation that recognizes the British Columbia employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work. Employers throughout British Columbia were evaluated by the editors at Canada's Top 100 Employers using the same criteria as the national competition: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The annual competition is open to any employer with its head office in British Columbia; employers of any size may apply, whether private or public sector.
