MONTRÉAL, June 10, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - As part of the Conference of Montreal, the NGO Right to Energy SOS Future today submitted to a senior representative of the United Nations, Mr. Kandeh Yumkella, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer, Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All), a request for the establishment of a World Day of Sustainable Energy for All.
The request was made by Richard Perreault, head of the organization, during a seminar on the theme of access to energy, organized by the Conference of Montréal.
In a text describing its proposal, Right to Energy emphasizes that at present, 1.4 billion people do not have access to electricity.
The NGO said that "access to sustainable energy is a factor that contributes to growth and human development. There is a consensus among experts that all economic and social activities depend on the availability of sustainable energy."
The NGO proposes that the UN, through its Secretary-General, " designate one day as 'World Day of Sustainable Energy for All', to be celebrated from 2015 on, until access to energy for all becomes a reality.
The day will be devoted to practical activities designed to achieve this objective, while providing updates on what needs to be done.
The NGO Right to Energy – SOS Future (www.energiesosfutur.org/?lang=en) is based in Paris. Its mandate is to defend and promote energy for all.
