World Vision responds to Loblaw's press conference about Bangladesh tragedy
MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 2, 2013 /CNW/ -
Dave Toycen, World Vision Canada President and CEO, said:
"It's encouraging to see Galen Weston speak out about the recent tragedy in Bangladesh and what this could mean for the garment industry. We would like to see other retailers step up so that change can happen for the workers and families of Bangladesh and other developing countries that make the shirts on our backs."
"We need governments, companies and Canadian consumers to work together to address several key issues to make sure that this kind of horrific tragedy never happens again. Canadian companies can start with building codes, but must also look at other human rights issues including wages, health and the exploitation of children."
Quick Facts:
World Vision commissioned a national Ipsos Reid poll asking Canadians if they'd be willing to spend more to ensure that the goods they purchase were free of child labour, which is often prevalent in garment factories in developing countries.
- 68 per cent of Canadians would spend an average of 16 per cent more if there was a guarantee that the products they bought were free of child labour.
- Eight in ten (79 per cent) Canadians said they want to make an effort to ensure they know how and where things they purchase are made.
- 78 per cent said they have no idea if what they are buying is contributing to the exploitation of children in other countries.
