World Vision says Quebecers are generous
MONTREAL, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - Over the course of two months this summer, 1,523 Quebecers responded to World Vision's challenge and began sponsoring children in the developing world.
"Recent world events and donor response have led some to question the philanthropic interest of Quebecers," remarks Isabelle Depelteau, Quebec Director for World Vision. "The number of people who have committed to child sponsorship proves that Quebecers are compassionate and generous.
"People want to become child sponsors because it is one of the most tangible ways to demonstrate solidarity with people in need. Investing in development this way provides long-term solutions to poverty."
From July 5 to September 6, World Vision conducted a province-wide campaign known as Défi Québec: two months to change their world, with a goal of 1,500 new child sponsorships. Representatives canvassed door-to-door and in malls, and the challenge was advertised on television, radio and newspaper.
"The goal of child sponsorship," says Depelteau "is to provide the resources so that communities can ensure the well-being of children and families in a sustainable way. Children living in poverty are able to access such basic necessities as food, water, education and health care," she says.
Depelteau also points out that there are benefits for the sponsor through this kind of giving. "Child sponsors can communicate with their child, follow her progress, and even arrange a visit to meet her and her family. Knowing that your charitable giving is making a concrete difference is very satisfying."
Before the campaign, more than 34,000 children in developing countries were sponsored by Quebec residents. That number is now closer to 36,000.
Although the Défi Québec campaign has come to a close, Quebec residents can still sponsor a child by calling 1 800 363-5021or online at www.visionmondiale.ca/defiquebec.
