Launch of www.JusticeForRioTintoWorkers.ca
TORONTO, March 14, 2012 /CNW/ - Because of the growing interest and involvement by working people internationally, Steelworkers in Alma, Quebec, locked out by worldwide conglomerate Rio Tinto since the start of 2012, launched the English version of their website today: www.JusticeForRioTintoWorkers.ca.
"The website gives us a way to share developments of our fight with our supporters around the world," said Marc Maltais, President of USW Local 9490, just returned from a solidarity trip meeting fellow Rio Tinto Workers in California, Utah, New Zealand and Australia.
"Our website www.SolidariteAlma.org is the go-to site to find the latest news, solidarity and photos of our members fighting Rio Tinto's attack on our community," added Maltais.
"Now our campaign has an English site as well, because so many of Rio Tinto workers around the world want to hear about how we are taking on this company and fighting for the jobs of the future," said Ken Neumann, United Steelworkers National Director for Canada. "The USW has launched a global campaign against Rio Tinto's attacks on workers, a campaign that has already drawn incredible financial support and solidarity from unions and social organizations from around the world.
The English website complements the Facebook page and the local's French website with structured information, background on the issues, links to news stories, photos and videos. USW Local 9490's Facebook page has amassed more than 2,500 followers.
"We are organizing a massive rally in Alma, Quebec for Saturday, March 31, 2012," explained Daniel Roy, District Director for Quebec. "Members of the community and supporters from far and wide will join the fight against Rio Tinto and call for a fair deal with quality jobs for future generations. We will call for an end to Rio Tinto's war on workers."
A solidarity bus trip of Steelworkers from Toronto visited the northern Quebec picket line on March 5, 2012. A video of their visit is available on the new website www.JusticeForRioTintoWorkers.ca.
Rio Tinto locked out 780 members of the United Steelworkers at its smelter in Alma, Quebec on December 31, 2011.
