York Region principal begins term as president of OPC
TORONTO, July 3, 2012 /CNW/ - Ken Arnott, a principal from the York Region District School Board, began his one-year term as President of the Ontario Principals' Council (OPC) on July 1. Ken has been an educator for 28 years, including 14 years as an administrator.
"I am excited and honoured to represent so many dedicated education leaders across the province. Our role is paramount for creating successful schools and positive climates for our students. It is important that we continue to work with our staff, our parents and all other members of the school community to address issues such as equity and well-being," said Ken.
In addition to Ken, the 2012-13 Executive includes
- President-Elect Bob Pratt, Principal of Delta Secondary School (Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board)
- Vice-President Sharon Bowes, Principal of Kerns Public School (District School Board Ontario North East)
- Vice-President John Hamilton, Principal of Sunderland Public School (Durham District School Board)
- Member-at-Large Susan Ferguson, Principal of North Lambton Secondary School (Lambton-Kent District School Board)
- Member-at-Large Brian Serafini, Principal of Wellington Heights Secondary School (Upper Grand District School Board) and
- Past-President Naeem Siddiq, Principal of North Albion Collegiate Institute (Toronto District School Board).
Ken has been seconded from his board for one year and will be based at the provincial office in Toronto until June 30, 2013. By seconding a practising principal, the OPC is able to monitor the issues and concerns that are most current and relevant to Ontario's schools. His experience as a front line school leader allows him to share what really happens in schools with the Education Minister, MPPs, stakeholder groups, media and the public. Ken is an experienced and knowledgeable source.
"The greatest reward of our job comes from students who are safe, engaged and successful, and I am committed to helping school leaders across the province create the conditions to achieve those goals," added Ken. "I'm looking forward to serving the OPC as an informed leader who can build on the ideals of those who preceded me."
The Ontario Principals' Council is the professional association representing more than 5,000 principals and vice-principals in Ontario's public elementary and secondary schools. Established in 1998, the OPC advocates on behalf of public education and provides professional supports to its Members.
