- Game Shakers special holiday episode puts kid coders in the spotlight
TORONTO, Dec. 1, 2015 /CNW/ - YTV is celebrating Computer Science Education Week and the Hour of Code by launching Code Week from Monday, December 7 to Saturday, December 12 on The Zone and YTV.com. In conjunction with the global initiative that began in 2013 to make computer science more accessible to kids, YTV has lined up a number of kidtastic cross-platform activities and learn-to-code segments that correspond with fun and easy-to-do tutorials.
"We are excited to welcome our YTV fans into the world of coding in a fun and interesting way," said Colin Bohm, Executive Vice President, Head of Corus Kids. "The coding activities and games are just in time for the holiday episode of Game Shakers, which champions young coders who create their own mobile game."
Every day during YTV's Code Week, The Zone will air short segments featuring Mylie as she goes through the steps to customize a digital holiday card for The Zone hosts with the help of a mentor from Ladies and Girls Learning Code, a Canadian non-profit organization that offers beginner coding education. Over the course of the week Mylie will learn basic code language including HTML and CSS to create a funny holiday message for The Zone hosts, Carlos, Suki, Lisa and Victor, which will be revealed on Friday, December 11. A selection of Mylie's segments will air again during Zone Weekend on Saturday, December 12. Viewers will be able to follow along with Mylie's lessons online and customize their own digital cards with the help of daily instructional updates every day on YTV.com.
YTV has an additional surprise for viewers on Friday, December 11 when a coding instructor from tech-driven makerspace studio, MakerKids visits The Zone to help Carlos design and code a robot to make it snow on the holiday set.
YTV.com will extend the coding fun with a ton of quizzes, activities and blogs about coding, including Coding Kickoff, a puzzle game that features YTV characters.
Coinciding with Mylie and Carlos' holiday coding activities, YTV's series Game Shakers, will air its holiday episode. Set in Brooklyn, New York, Game Shakers centres on middle-school students and Kenzie who create the biggest mobile game of the year named Sky Whale and team up with rap superstar Double G (1990s icon Kel Mitchell), his son Triple G and schoolmate Hudson to launch their own gaming empire. In the special holiday episode, the Game Shakers visit Double G on the set of his live, self-indulgent "Double G's Christmas Special." During the opening number, his hair catches on fire and they must finish the show without him. The Game Shakers holiday episode airs on Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. ET/PT
