WINNIPEG, Dec. 17, 2013 /CNW/ - At its meeting in Winnipeg on November 4, 2013, the Western Standards Committee recommended new standard samples and guide samples for peas and wheat.
At the meeting, Canadian Grain Commission inspection experts reported that the most common grading factors were:
- Ergot and fusarium damage in wheat
- Weather staining and immaturity in soybeans and peas
- Hard vitreous kernels (HVK) in amber durum
Standard samples, standard prints and guide samples
Standard samples, standard prints and guide samples are grading tools that the Canadian Grain Commission prepares each year. Members of the Western Standards Committee examine these tools and recommend their use.
New standard samples
The Western Standards Committee recommended the following new standard samples for the 2013-2014 crop year:
- Peas, No. 1 Canada (Yellow) Standard
- Peas, No. 2 Canada (Yellow) Standard
Standard samples and prints previously adopted for other grades and grains will continue to be used.
New guide samples
The Western Standards Committee recommended the following new guide samples for the 2013-2014 crop year:
- Wheat, No. 2 Canada Western Amber Durum, Mildew Guide
- Wheat, No. 3 Canada Western Amber Durum, Mildew Guide
Guide samples previously adopted for other grades and grain will continue to be used.
Grading changes effective August 1, 2014
- Removal of grade No. 4 Wheat, Canada Western Red Spring
- Removal of grade No. 4 Wheat, Canada Western Hard White Spring
- Removal of experimental grades of barley from Chapter 24 of the Official Grain Grading Guide
Grading studies and projects
The Western Standards Committee bases its grading recommendations, in part, on the outcome of grading studies and projects. At the meeting, the committee received updates on several projects.
- A study on the effect of green hulls on processing quality in order to determine how much green is allowable in No. 2 soybeans was completed. No grading changes were recommended.
- The Canadian Grain Commission worked with the industry to clarify how red smudge in Wheat, Canada Western Amber Durum is graded.

The Western Standards Committee meets twice a year to recommend specifications for grades of grain, and to select and recommend standard and guide samples to the Canadian Grain Commission. Members represent different sectors of the grain industry and include producers, grain processors, and exporters.
