2012 CaRMS R-1 Main Residency Match Results

OTTAWA, April 18, 2012 /CNW/ - A record number of medical graduates matched to residency training programs in Canada this year, the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) announced today. A total of 3060 medical graduates were matched in the 2012 R-1 Main Residency Match and will begin their postgraduate training on July 1, 2012.

In the 2012 match, a total of 2622 Canadian medical graduates (CMGs) were matched to residency programs, an increase of 5% from 2011. This group represents 96% of all CMGs in the match. Of those that matched, the majority of these graduates (88%) were accepted into one of their top three choices of residency programs, both by discipline and location. This year, 35% of CMGs selected Family Medicine as their first choice discipline, which is the largest proportion of CMGs who chose Family Medicine in the last 20 years.

A total of 407 international medical graduates (IMGs) matched to residency training positions, an increase of 7% from 2011. This group represents 19% of all international medical graduates in the match. More than 85% of matched IMGs were accepted into one of their top three program choices. Combined with the 41 applicants placed into postgraduate residency positions with the Alberta International Medical Graduate (AIMG) program, over 440 IMGs will begin training in Canada in July 2012.

Other highlights of the 2012 R-1 Main Residency Match results include an increased IMG interest in Family Medicine. A total of 50% of internationally-trained graduates chose Family Medicine as their career choice.
