2016 Census language data - Interim Commissioner of Official Languages says doubts about the size of Quebec's English-speaking communities need to be cleared up as soon as possible Français
GATINEAU, QC, Aug. 10, 2017 /CNW/ - Interim Commissioner of Official Languages Ghislaine Saikaley voiced her concerns today about the reliability of the 2016 Census data released last week by Statistics Canada on Quebec's English-speaking communities.
"We absolutely need to be able to count on accurate data in order to assess the language situation in every province and territory," stressed Saikaley. "These figures have a direct impact on public policy, including decisions as to which federal offices are required to provide services in both official languages."
Media coverage today reported doubts about the accuracy of Statistics Canada's August 2 report on the increase in the number of English-speaking Quebecers.
The Interim Commissioner is convinced that Statistics Canada will take prompt action to confirm the accuracy of the data it has released and to maintain the high degree of trust that is placed in Canadian Census data.
