The IRCM announces the appointment of Dr. Yves Berthiaume
MONTREAL, Oct. 3, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The IRCM's President and Scientific Director, Dr. Tarik Möröy, announces the appointment of Dr. Yves Berthiaume as Executive Director of the clinic and clinical research, and Full IRCM Research Professor.
"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Berthiaume," says Dr. Möröy. "He brings new expertise to the IRCM. Renowned pulmonologist, he will set up a specialized clinic in cystic fibrosis. He will also conduct his research projects in the new Cellular and Molecular Lung Biology research unit. He will join the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases research program, and will also be a member of the IRCM's Management Committee."
Dr. Yves Berthiaume graduated in medicine from the Université de Sherbrooke. He specializes in pulmonology and physiology. He completed this postdoctoral training at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF). Before his arrival at the IRCM, he was a researcher at the Hôtel-Dieu's research centre, which is part of the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), pulmonologist and member of the CHUM's cystic fibrosis clinic. Dr. Berthiaume is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal and an associate member of the Meakins-Christie Laboratories at McGill University.
"I am pleased to join the IRCM's team of researchers and clinicians," says Dr. Berthiaume. "I know I will be working with wonderful people. I also know that the challenges will be great. One of my goals as Executive Director of the clinic and clinical research will be to set up translational research program of international calibre at the IRCM, by creating an environment of continual interaction between basic researchers and clinical researchers. To be competitive, this program will rely on the IRCM's scientific strengths and the establishment of partnerships with other institutions with common interests."
Dr. Berthiaume is taking over from Dr. Pierre Larochelle, who held the position for over 10 years. The latter will continue his work on hypertension at the institute as IRCM Emeritus Professor, and will keep consulting with his patients at the clinic. He will also remain a member of the institute's Scientific Committee.
