OTTAWA, May 3, 2018 /CNW/ - The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is pleased to announce that an agreement in principle has been reached between the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta for a new 25-year lease allowing CSC the exclusive use and occupancy of Grande Cache Institution.
Grande Cache Institution opened as a medium security provincial correctional centre in 1985. On June 30, 1995, a twenty-five-year agreement was signed through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada. The expiration date for the original agreement is June 30, 2020.
CSC is an important employer for the town of Grande Cache, Alberta. The institution provides employment for approximately 300 employees. The importance of the institution and its ongoing contributions to the community were recognized in October 2015 when Grande Cache held a ceremony providing Grande Cache Institution "Freedom of the Town".
The signing of this new agreement will make a positive difference in the town of Grande Cache, resulting in secure employment for many of its residents and financial stability for the town. It will also allow Grande Cache Institution staff and inmates to continue contributing to meaningful community and infrastructure projects. In the past, CSC staff and inmates on work release, have organized the Grande Cache Community Christmas Dinner, as well as built signs and benches in public areas including the picnic tables for Jasper National Park.
