Beautycounter Consultants Converge in Ottawa, Urging Members of Parliament To Act on Cosmetics Reform Français
Consultants from across Canada to meet with Members of Parliament today to encourage stricter regulation of personal-care products and support Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) reform.
OTTAWA, May 7, 2019 /CNW/ - Furthering its commitment to get safer products into the hands of everyone, Beautycounter, a trailblazer in safer skin care and cleaner cosmetics, will bring more than 25 company leaders to Parliament today to urge Members to act on cosmetics reform that will advance consumer safety.
Led by Beautycounter Founder and CEO, Gregg Renfrew, along with SVP of Social Mission, Lindsay Dahl, Consultants from across Canada will meet with Members of Parliament to call Canadian regulators to:
- Increase the oversight and safety of personal-care products by making prohibited ingredients (known as the "Hot List") legally enforceable.
- Prohibit phthalates from use in cosmetics.
- Close the fragrance loophole.
- Better enforce heavy metal standards in colour cosmetics.
"Today's consumers are more sophisticated than ever and unafraid to demand better, safer products; and they deserve them," said Renfrew. "Companies like Beautycounter are meeting this demand but we cannot change the industry alone. Only with action by the government can businesses thrive while making a lasting positive impact on the health of consumers and the environment."
"Despite the fact that Canada restricts far more ingredients than the U.S. – 600 versus 30 – we knew that more needed to be done. A recent report confirmed what we have long known: 20 years after the passage of CEPA, Canadians are no longer being adequately protected from toxic exposures in consumer products, including personal-care products. With the general election this October, we believe that the time is now for action," added Renfrew.
In the U.S., Beautycounter has been a leader on Capitol Hill since its founding in 2013, and in 2017 created the Counteract Coalition, a collective of 20 better-for-you beauty brands committed to pushing safer cosmetics ingredient laws.
