24 new projects approved in 12 communities across Ontario
DURHAM REGION, ON, April 27, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to ensuring that Canadians have access to safe, clean and reliable drinking water. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect waterways and preserve local ecosystems, while laying the foundation for new economic opportunities that strengthen the middle class.
Celina Caesar-Chavannes, Member of Parliament for Whitby, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; Granville Anderson, Member of Provincial Parliament for Durham, on behalf of the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure; and Gerri Lynn O'Connor, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Durham Region, today announced that three new projects in the Regional Municipality of Durham have been approved under the Government of Canada's Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF). The federal government is providing $1.1 million—50 per cent of funding for these projects. The provincial government is providing over $556,000 of total eligible costs, and the Region will provide the balance of funding.
Thanks to this investment, residents will soon benefit from cleaner drinking water and better wastewater treatment. Three existing water mains in Oshawa will be replaced and upgraded with modern infrastructure. These projects will result in improved water quality and distribution that will make for greener and cleaner communities.
In addition to these projects, over $5.4 million in federal funding for 21 other water and wastewater projects will benefit 11 other communities across Ontario. The provincial government is providing more than $2.7 million for these 21 projects.
This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the CWWF.
