OHSWEKEN, ON, April 28, 2014 /CNW/ - Indspire, the largest funder of Indigenous education outside the federal government, and Cameco, one of the world's largest uranium producers, have announced the creation of the Cameco Corporation Scholarship for First Nation and Métis Students, a new $200,000 scholarship fund to be offered over four years.
The Cameco Corporation Scholarship is part of Indspire's Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries and Scholarship Awards program. Beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year, this scholarship will provide financial support to Indigenous students as they strive to complete their post-secondary education.
The Building Brighter Futures program offers bursaries and scholarships for students pursuing studies in the sciences, fine arts, trades and technology, oil and gas, health careers and other post-secondary education. Upcoming deadlines to apply for scholarships for this year are June 1, 2014 and November 1, 2014.
"Research shows that lack of financial support is the most significant barrier to success in attaining a post-secondary education for Indigenous students," said Roberta Jamieson, President and CEO of Indspire. "By partnering with Indspire, Cameco is expanding the impact of its investment in students in northern Saskatchewan."
"Cameco and Indspire share the belief that education is key to future prosperity," said Tim Gitzel, Cameco President and CEO. "We are proud that our contribution to Indspire's Building Brighter Futures program will significantly increase the resources and opportunities available to First Nation and Métis youth in northern Saskatchewan."
All Indigenous applicants from the Northern Administrative District will now apply through Indspire's website at indspire.ca/apply.
