Canada discusses the importance of transportation and trade to the economy at the International Transport Forum's 2012 summit

OTTAWA, May 3, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, today delivered a speech at the International Transport Forum's (ITF's) 2012 summit. This year's summit, held in Leipzig, Germany, from May 2 to 4, focuses on the theme Seamless Transport: Making Connections.

"I am pleased to be able to discuss with my international counterparts the critical role transportation plays in the global economy, and Canada's many successes" said Minister Lebel. "The ITF is unique among multilateral organizations since it takes a truly international perspective on all transportation modes, and allows elected officials and the business community to share expertise."

In his speech, Minister Lebel highlighted Canada's successful strategic gateways and trade corridors approach as a means to build innovative partnerships and leverage financing. He also emphasized the importance of taking a systems-based approach to improve efficiency and ensure seamlessness across the entire supply chain.

"The success of our gateways and corridors initiative, from coast to coast, is about much more than bricks and mortar," added Minister Lebel. "Beyond physical infrastructure, much of our success has been gained from partnerships, policy and marketing. I was pleased to share the Canadian experience with my counterparts from around the world."

2012 summit participants considered in depth transportation connectivity issues related to passengers and cargo. These included cross-border movements and ways to create seamless logistics, apply technology and implement innovative solutions.

The International Transport Forum's annual summit brings together 53 countries and over 800 participants, including transportation ministers, experts, researchers, business leaders and members of the international media. It aims to find solutions to global transport-related issues and foster a deeper understanding of the integral role transportation plays in the world economy. The broad range of participants makes the forum unique among multilateral organizations.
