MONTREAL, Sept. 18, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Birks, Canada's leading prestige jeweller since 1879, is today announcing that Canada's only gold medallist in London, trampoline athlete Rosannagh MacLennan, is the new recipient of the Birks Canadian Diamond award. The Birks Canadian Diamond, awarded for the first time during the Cannes Film Festival last May, serves to recognize Canadians of different horizons whose talent and accomplishments have allowed Canada to be celebrated on the international stage.
"It is with great pleasure that we are presenting the Birks Canadian Diamond to Rosannagh MacLennan. This prize was created to celebrate Canadians who allow our country to be applauded internationally through their hard work and success, a statement which describes Rosannagh's performance in London," said Jean-Christophe Bédos, President and CEO of Birks & Mayors Inc. "The Olympic Games are the ultimate championship and everyone around the world recognizes Olympians as the best athletes in their category. We are proud to see Rosannagh excel in front of an international audience while wearing the colours of Canada," he concluded.
Through the creation of the Birks Canadian Diamond, Birks draws a parallel between diamonds mined in Canada and pure Canadian talent; both of which shine beyond our own frontiers to delight others around the world. Rosannagh MacLennan is the third recipient of the Birks Canadian Diamond; Canadian film actresses Sarah Gadon and Emily Hampshire were awarded the distinction from Birks at a special ceremony held during the Cannes Film Festival this spring.
Birks presented all Canadian medallists in London with a special present to congratulate them on their performance: the brand new, white gold maple leaf pendant (a lapel pin version was especially designed for male athletes), part of the jeweller's new collection to be introduced this fall called LES PLAISIRS DE BIRKS. A total of 57 athletes received a little blue box from Birks with a gold maple leaf pendant or pin as a celebratory gift.
Birks has been a partner of the Canadian Olympic Committee since 2010, when the jeweller also served as the Official Jewellery Supplier of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.
