OTTAWA, Oct. 30, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has played a key role in locating a suspected child abductor at Montréal-Trudeau Airport.
Last Thursday, the Repentigny and Montreal police forces and the RCMP were investigating an alleged child abduction and learned the suspect was heading to Montréal-Trudeau Airport. They immediately called for assistance from CATSA's Security Operations Centre (SOC).
The SOC is the central nervous system of CATSA's screening operations. It supports the work of screening officers by monitoring checkpoints at Canada's major airports in real time.
SOC operators quickly found the information needed to locate the suspect. It was shared with law enforcement officers who intercepted the individual at the boarding gate.
"We are proud to have contributed to the success of this police operation," said Angus Watt, CATSA's President and Chief Executive Officer. "In addition to assisting our partners, the SOC plays an essential coordination role at the national level."
The SOC not only ensures that operations run smoothly, it also provides passenger services, including locating lost or stolen items and playing a lead role in resolving complaints and claims.
CATSA, established in 2002, is a Crown corporation responsible for:
- Pre-board screening - the screening of passengers, their carry-on baggage and their personal belongings;
- Hold-baggage screening - the screening of checked baggage;
- Non-passenger screening - the screening of non-passengers on a random basis; and
- Restricted Area Identity Card - the administration of access control to airport restricted areas through biometric identifiers.
