MONTREAL, Aug. 2, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport have made a major cocaine seizure on July 26, 2012. In total, over 7.9 kilos of cocaine were intercepted.
The seizure was made in the false bottoms of two suitcases of a traveller arriving from Haiti.
A first test with Ionscan technology done by the border services officers at the airport was positive. It brought them to do an X-ray inspection, which showed masses under false bottoms in the suitcases. Officers drilled a hole in the suitcases and a white powder escaped. Tests conducted using Ionscan technology and NIK Test showed that the substance was cocaine.
CBSA officers arrested the traveller, who was turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The RCMP will conduct an investigation.
"I am proud of the work of the CBSA officers who are trained as experts to intercept narcotics," said Jean-Paul Bergeron, Executive Director of CBSA, Quebec Region. "Once again, the Canada Border Services Agency prevents illegal drug smuggling that endangers the safety of our communities and benefits organized crime."
From January 1 to July 31, 2012, CBSA officers at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport made 156 drug seizures. For the same period, the border services officers have made 1,018 seizures in the Quebec Region.
