MONTREAL, Aug. 22, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers have seized 24.7 kg of suspected cocaine at the port of Montréal.
Border services officers discovered the suspected cocaine on August 14, 2013 in a sports bag that was inside a marine container. While examining the container, officers noticed a sports bag among the merchandise boxes. Officers searched the suspicious bag and found a total of 21 packages wrapped inside paper packaging. Tests determined that it was suspected cocaine.
The narcotics were turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who continue to investigate.
"I am proud of the work done by CBSA officers who are constantly on the lookout for illicit substances like cocaine," said Benoît Chiquette, Regional Director General, CBSA, Quebec Region. "The CBSA plays an essential role in crime prevention in Canada, and that includes keeping illegal drugs from entering our communities."
In 2012, border services officers across Canada made 11,017 drug seizures, including 360 cocaine seizures.
