CHRC statement on meeting with UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya

OTTAWA, Oct. 8, 2013 /CNW/ - David Langtry, Acting Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC), has met with James Anaya, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The meeting took place in Ottawa on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Mr. Langtry was accompanied by senior CHRC officials.

In the course of the meeting Mr. Langtry presented to the Special Rapporteur a submission prepared by the CHRC on chronic conditions of disadvantage facing Aboriginal peoples in Canada.

"Professor Anaya is one of the world's leading authorities on the rights of Indigenous peoples and it is an honour to exchange views with him on what I believe to be one of the most pressing human rights issues facing Canada today," Mr. Langtry said. 

"There needs to be a concerted effort at all levels of government - federal, provincial, territorial and First Nations - to find solutions," he added.

Mr. Anaya is scheduled to hold a news conference in Ottawa at the conclusion of his visit to Canada. He will prepare and make public a report on his findings, which will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2014.
