BELLEVILLE, ON, June 16, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Wetlands and other natural features in the Belleville area are in store for a real boost thanks to an $850,000 sponsorship from CN (TSX: CNR) (NYSE: CNI). This new three-year partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) will support the conservation and restoration of wetlands vital for waterfowl, other wildlife and the people of Belleville and surrounding areas.
"To achieve our goals, DUC relies on the support of corporations who care about our environment and wetlands in particular," said Jamie Fortune, acting CEO for DUC. "This sponsorship reflects CN's commitment to environmental stewardship. With CN's help, we can protect some of Canada's most threatened and valuable ecosystems within one of the most important waterfowl areas on the lower Great Lakes."
As CN's transportation network extends across North America, it passes through a wide range of habitats, including national parks, forests, prairies and wetlands. CN developed its CN EcoConnexions environmental stewardship strategy to help protect the diversity and variety of life in all these areas, part of its overall effort to strive towards a net positive impact on the environment.
"Wetlands are an essential component of a sustainable, healthy ecosystem," said John Orr, CN vice-president and chief safety and sustainability officer. "CN applauds Ducks Unlimited Canada for its decades of work to protect and preserve these natural features, and is pleased to support these initiatives in the Belleville area."
This partnership financially supports the rebuilding of several key existing wetland projects. In addition, CN funds will help build 20 new wetland conservation projects expecting to total 250 acres of habitat.
This new conservation partnership was formally announced today at the H.R. Frink Outdoor Education Centre by Tom Worden, President DUC and Normand Pellerin, Assistant Vice-President, CN Sustainability.
