TORONTO, Dec. 9, 2014 /CNW/ - The Winston Gordon Award of Excellence in Accessible Technology is presented to an individual or group who has made significant technological advances benefiting people with vision loss. Nominations are now being accepted, the deadline for submitting is January 16, 2015.
The Winston Gordon Award was established by CNIB in 1988 and is awarded annually in the form of a cash prize of up to $10,000 CAD. The award will be presented in Toronto on March 25, 2015.
Nominations are welcomed from individuals, small firms or mainstream suppliers of goods and services, as well as developers of assistive technology. Nominations may be submitted from any country or territory and must meet the following criteria:
The device or software must have originated from within Canada;
- The device or software must be currently available in Canada;
- The device or software must have been in market from between 3 – 5 years at time of nomination; and
- The device or software must have a documented benefit to people who are blind or partially sighted.

Winston Graham Gordon was born on August 2, 1901 in Hamilton, Ontario. Although he lost his vision in early childhood, he became a successful entrepreneur and industrialist, and founded his own business, the Steel Fabricating and Welding Company Limited. For more than 25 years, he volunteered his time and talent to furthering the work of CNIB where his skills as a leader and role model were invaluable.
