CP has finally come to its senses and will let Teamsters workers operate commuter trains tomorrow...
LAVAL, QC, May 22, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Commuter trains in Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal will run on schedule tomorrow despite the possibility of a strike at Canadian Pacific (CP). The walkout will begin on May 23, at 12:01 a.m.
CP has finally listened to reason and accepted the offer made by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) in this regard.
"We told CP management that nothing could justify their decision to keep us from operating the commuter trains," explained Doug Finnson, vice-president of the Teamster Canada Rail Conference, which represents the rail company's 4,800 workers. "They wanted to fabricate a crisis, but it didn't work."
The TCRC bargaining agents would like to thank Labour Minister Lisa Raitt for her sensible approach in this matter.
"The Minister played a big part in making sure commuter train service is not interrupted," added Doug Finnson.
Bargaining will continue through the evening in a bid to avoid a work stoppage.
It will be recalled that on April 26, the Teamsters Union announced that 95% of its members had voted to go on strike.
The trades affected are conductors, yardmen, locomotive engineers and rail traffic controllers.
The Teamsters Union represents 125,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
