OTTAWA, April 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Dr. Ian Bowmer, FRCPC, executive director of the Medical Council of Canada has been awarded the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's prestigious 2012 James H. Graham Award of Merit. Working with drive, vision and integrity, Dr. Bowmer has overseen medical training at Memorial University, conducted important HIV research and shaped medical education nationwide.
"Dr. Bowmer is a true leader in Canadian health care," says Royal College CEO Andrew Padmos, MD, FRCPC. "He has worked diligently to advance patient care, improve training and bring medical institutions together to create lasting change."
Awarded annually, the James H. Graham Award of Merit recognizes a person whose outstanding achievements reflect the aims and objectives of the Royal College. This national award is a prestigious part of the Royal College Awards and Grants Program, which distributes $1 million a year through awards, grants, fellowships and visiting professorships.
A graduate of McGill University, Dr. Bowmer is recognized worldwide as a leader in medical education. He currently leads the Medical Council of Canada, which conducts more than 12,000 assessments of medical students and graduates every year. Dr. Bowmer has also lead many pivotal projects in Canadian medicine, including the Physician Credential Registry of Canada. This helped provide a centralized repository for physicians' core medical credentials, allowing provinces and regulators to more easily ensure that all physicians are properly qualified to deliver care.
Dr. Bowmer is also a professor emeritus of medicine at Memorial University, where for eight years he served the dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He has conducted extensive research in the area of AIDS and HIV disease and was asked to chair the National Working Group on HIV Therapies for Infants, Youth and Children.
During his 30-year career, Dr. Bowmer has received numerous awards for his research and work in medical education, including the Dr. Louis Levasseur Award and the Canadian Professors of Medicine Christie Award.
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is the national, not-for-profit organization that oversees the medical education of specialists in Canada by setting high standards for postgraduate medical education and continuing professional development. In collaboration with health organizations and government agencies, the Royal College also plays a role in developing sound health policy in Canada.
