World-Class Nuclear Training Facility Key to Successful Darlington Refurbishment
CLARINGTON, ON, Oct. 30, 2014 /CNW/ - Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli today unveiled OPG's new Darlington Energy Complex. Featuring a life-sized training model of a nuclear reactor face, the complex will help ensure Darlington's refurbishment is successfully executed.
"This training facility is a state-of-the-art resource which will help ensure the refurbishment of the Darlington reactors is completed on time and on budget," said Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli. "Upgrading and refurbishing our reactors means they will maintain an important role in Ontario's supply mix for generations to come."
Investing in refurbishment will create thousands of jobs and positive economic benefits across Ontario. As of August this year, OPG has entered into direct contracts worth about $1.75 billion with companies located in 21 communities.
The facility is part of OPG's intensive planning and preparation to ensure everyone working on the refurbishment will be trained and ready to complete their tasks safely, precisely and efficiently.
"This company has a solid track record of success with large-scale, complex nuclear and hydroelectric developments," said OPG Board Chair Bernard Lord. "We also learned from other refurbishments and adopted the best industry practices from around the world. This level of preparation coupled with OPG's experience, is a good formula for success."
"Darlington is one of the top nuclear plants in the world and has been internationally recognized for its safety and performance," said OPG President and CEO Tom Mitchell. "The station has served Ontario well. Refurbishment would provide 30 additional years of clean, low-cost, reliable power for the province."
The public is invited to tour the Darlington Energy Complex at the following times:
