A tennis event for cancer research!
MONTREAL, April 8, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The EUGENIE BOUCHARD CHALLENGE: exciting rallies, a delighted public, funds for cancer research and an all-around success!
Many tennis fans as well as numerous people from the business world and Quebec media participated in the EUGENIE BOUCHARD CHALLENGE which was held at the Nun's Island Tennis Club last Saturday to benefit the Cancer Research Society. This event represented a golden opportunity for the public to get up close and personal with the latest young professional sensation of women's tennis, and for the many fans who participated in the virtual auction, a ticket to play against the Westmount athlete now ranked 114th on the WTA circuit.
Of the eight people who made the highest bids in the silent auction; Sarah Levy, 12 years-old, who fulfilled her dream of playing against her idol as well as former professional player Valérie Tétreault - now an analyst at TVA Sports - who proudly represented the Nun's Island Tennis Club, alongside the representatives of Club Tennis 13 who wanted at all costs to play against Eugenie Bouchard, a $2,500 bid made by a player travelling from Toronto especially for the occasion, Eric Melka's exceptional contribution of $5,000 to play against the Canadian star of women's tennis, and the many witty comments expressed by Challenge host, Marius Brisson, determined to distract his talented opponent.
Among the invited artists, the very honorable performances of well-known comedian Michel-Olivier Girard alongside journalists Justine Boutet of Radio-Canada Sports and Paul Rivard of TVA Sports stood out despite the skills of their expert opponent.
For Eugenie Bouchard, just back from a competition in Charleston, South Carolina, where she played to the best of her talent, you could see the happiness and satisfaction she felt to be back among her loved ones. "I lost two grandparents to cancer and despite a little fatigue and a busy schedule, I was not about to miss this event. It was really fun."
As for Eugenie's father, Mike Bouchard - the organizer of the event and member of the Board of Directors of the Cancer Research Society - he had every reason to be proud of the achievements of his daughter, but also of his youngest daughter, Charlotte, without whom this 1st Challenge would never have taken place. "This project came to life thanks to Charlotte who came up with the idea while at school. I'm so happy today to see that her idea became a reality. A big thank you to all those who believed in it."
Thanks to the generous contribution of the public present at the event, coupled with the bids of the silent auction's 8 finalists who fought hard to face Eugenie Bouchard, a total of $14,000 was raised and will be dedicated to funding cancer research.
The Cancer Research Society wishes to also extend its warmest gratitude to Eugenie Bouchard, the organizing committee members including Charlotte Bouchard, Mike Bouchard, Marius Brisson and Paul Cadieux, as well as the participants and volunteers who contributed to the success of this event. "Just like our researchers who have invested themselves tirelessly for many years in hundreds of cancer research projects across the country, I want to pay tribute to all the participants and all members of the team who have valiantly worked in making this Eugenie Bouchard Challenge a true success" concluded Mr. Andy Chabot, Executive Director of the Cancer Research Society.
