GATINEAU, QC, Nov. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released its final railway investigation report (R11D0075) into the 24 September 2011 main-track derailment of a Canadian National Railway (CN) freight train near Pointe-Saint-Charles, Quebec. There were no injuries, and no spills of hazardous material.
The freight train was travelling eastward on the south track when it derailed 6 cars on CN's Montreal Subdivision. A number of track turnouts and about 650 feet of track were damaged. The investigation found that side-to-side force due to excessive speed and the sudden application of dynamic brakes caused the wheel of the 58th car to lift, leading to the derailment.
The TSB is an independent agency that investigates marine, pipeline, railway and aviation transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
