Former Court of Appeal Judge Returns to BLG
The Hon. Edward C. Chiasson, QC, Adds to Firm's Strength in International Arbitration and Litigation
VANCOUVER, March 2, 2016 /CNW/ - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that the Honourable Edward C. Chiasson, QC, has returned to the firm as counsel in its International Trade and Arbitration Group. He will be based in the Vancouver office. Mr. Chiasson retired from his position as a judge with the Court of Appeal for British Columbia in December 2015 after almost a decade of service. He was previously a partner at the firm until 2006, when he was appointed directly to the Court of Appeal.
"Prior to his appointment to the bench, Mr. Chiasson earned an impressive reputation as one of Canada's leading litigators, and as an internationally-renowned arbitrator," said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO. "We are delighted that he has decided to return to BLG, and make his wisdom and expertise available to our lawyers and our clients."
During his time at BLG before becoming a judge, Mr. Chiasson played a vital role in building the commercial litigation and arbitration practice in the firm's Vancouver office. His practice spanned the spectrum of commercial law, including construction law, before focusing on international arbitration, where he became one of Canada's pre-eminent arbitrators and counsel.
"We are very proud that Mr. Chiasson has chosen to return to BLG after his illustrious career on the bench," said Graham Walker, regional managing partner of BLG's Vancouver office. "His vast and varied experience in arbitration is a particularly significant asset to our clients, whom we represent in arbitration proceedings around the world, and he will be a resource to the whole firm."
Mr. Chiasson has significant experience in investor-state disputes (having served on the tribunal hearing one of the first claims under Chapter Eleven of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and an ICSID case) as well as all types of international commercial arbitration, and under all of the major sets of institutional rules. He has been appointed to hear cases seated throughout the world, and involving parties from Europe, North America, the Pacific Rim and India. Mr. Chiasson has been a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Robert Deane, national leader of BLG's International Trade and Arbitration Group, said, "It is fitting that Mr. Chiasson is returning to the International Arbitration Group, for which he laid the foundation many years ago. Building on what Mr. Chiasson and others started, the firm's arbitration practice has since gone from strength to strength. We are all excited to again have the chance to work with him, and benefit from his vast experience and guidance."
In addition to being counsel at BLG, Mr. Chiasson will also be a member arbitrator at Arbitration Place, a leading fully integrated arbitration centre located in Toronto.
Mr. Chiasson received his LLB in 1966 from the University of British Columbia. He was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in 1967, and was called to the Bars of Alberta and Yukon Territory in 1977.
