Funding to preserve affordable rental housing in Halifax

HALIFAX, Feb. 8, 2018 /CNW/ - People living on low-to-moderate incomes have increased access to affordable housing in Halifax with the re-opening of 22-24 Evans Ave. This project was funded through the joint federal-provincial Social Infrastructure Fund and Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) agreement, which are administered through the provincial Affordable Housing Rental Preservation Program.   

The extensive renovation of two buildings by Connolly Real Estate Holdings Inc. provides 27 units of safe and secure housing to new residents. The buildings are located in a residential neighborhood and are within easy access to businesses, amenities and public transportation.  

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Honourable Kelly Regan, Minister of Community Services, made the announcement.

• The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia invested $1.19 million as a capital contribution to the project
• This project helps preserve affordable rental housing in the Fairview area of Halifax. There is a broad range of services within 1km of the project, including grocery and drug stores, schools, recreation facilities, sports fields, restaurants and entertainment venues.
• The Government of Canada recently unveiled its National Housing Strategy - a 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need.
