FARNBOROUGH, UNITED KINGDOM, July 12, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - Aéro Montréal, Québec's aerospace cluster, today signed a sub-agreement at the 2016 Farnborough International Airshow with Aerospace Valley, the French competitiveness cluster, regarding the organization of a case study on aircraft recycling for Québec students. Presentations by the finalists (publicly available) will take place on October 1, 2016, during an open house event at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montréal during International Civil Aviation Week organized by Aéroports de Montréal, Aéro Montréal, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal and Montréal International.
This competition, organized by Aéro Montréal on its digital ecosystem, will focus on a theme that is critical to the future of the global aerospace industry: aircraft recycling. Students from the engineering and business faculties will be asked to develop a sustainable and profitable solution for recovering 100% of the parts of an end-of-life aircraft, here in Québec. The projects will be presented to a jury which will determine a winner.
"These kinds of initiatives, targeting the next generation of workers, are needed to stimulate the creativity of our youth and spark their interest in the aerospace sector," says Suzanne M. Benoît, President of Aéro Montréal. "The theme of aircraft recycling is a key challenge of the future. Regulations on environmental protection are becoming increasingly stringent, with good reason. This competition is therefore an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about this important issue among young people."
Over the past five years, the average lifespan of a commercial aircraft has declined from 31 years to 26 years today, which has accelerated the retirement of these aircraft from fleets. About 6,000 commercial aircraft will be withdrawn from service in the next 20 years.
The case study was developed in collaboration with Aerospace Valley as well as with members of the aerospace cluster: Aéroports de Montréal, Air Transat, Avianor and Bombardier.
The competition winners will be announced during an open house day at the ÉTS following the presentation of their case studies, accessible to the public. Through our 2007 partnership with Aerospace Valley, the winners will have the opportunity to travel to Toulouse to visit the various aerospace facilities in the region.
