WESTMOUNT, QC, Oct. 5, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Peter Trent, mayor of Westmount and president of the Association of Suburban Municipalities (ASM), today wrote to the president of the Union des Municipalités du Québec (UMQ) to demand that Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, at least temporarily, step down from his various positions at the UMQ. Currently, Vaillancourt is a member of the UMQ executive committee and council, as well as president of the caucus of municipalities of metropolitan Montreal.
This is not the first time Mayor Trent has made this request. In November 2010, the SQ launched an inquiry following serious allegations of improprieties by Vaillancourt. When Vaillancourt refused to step down from his UMQ responsibilities, Mayor Trent immediately quit the UMQ executive committee and council in protest. Trent told the UMQ that any member of its executive committee or council must have "an exemplary comportment with no suggestion of irregular behaviour." Mayor Trent has refused to return to the UMQ ever since.
"Given all that is transpiring at the Charbonneau Commission, it is even more important today that elected officials regain the trust and confidence of the public," said Mayor Trent.
