New equipment will help youth in the community
IQALUIT, NU, April 24, 2014 /CNW/ - Office of the Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council.
Minister Leona Aglukkaq today announced funding that will replace playground equipment in the Hamlet of Kugaaruk. The previous playground equipment had deteriorated and was removed for safety reasons.
Studies have shown the importance of physical activity. Children who engage in play are healthier, have higher self-esteem, and communicate better with others. This new playground equipment will benefit the physical and mental health of the children in Kugaaruk.
Quick Facts
- CanNor's investment of $100,000, along with $100,700 in funding from the Hamlet of Kugaaruk will go towards the purchase and installation of the playground equipment.
- This playground equipment will be specifically manufactured for use in the Arctic with a special coating over the steel to prevent frost freeze, helping to make it safer for use in cold conditions.
- The playground equipment is expected to be installed by the end of Summer 2014.
