Government of Canada takes action to prevent sexual violence in Manitoba

WINNIPEG, April 25, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, today announced support to help community organizations  reduce and prevent sexual violence against women and girls in Manitoba.

Klinic Inc. of Winnipeg is receiving funding to work with rural and northern community service providers and stakeholders who have contact with women and girls who are victims of sexual violence. The project will support the development of better coordinated responses for these victims. It will also support establishment of a provincial network of service providers in the area of sexual assault, to increase collaboration and improve coordination of services to victims.

This project was selected through the Government of Canada's call for proposals entitled Cyber and Sexual Violence: Helping Communities Respond.

• Status of Women Canada is providing $169,500 to Klinic Inc. for this 24 month project.
• Since 2007, the Government of Canada has delivered more than $69 million through the Women's Program at Status of Women Canada for projects to prevent violence against women and girls.
• Through Status of Women Canada, federal funding of community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, supporting more than 720 projects across Canada.
