Governments of Canada, and Newfoundland and Labrador improve safety and shorten travel times on Trans Labrador Highway

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, NL, June 25, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada, and Newfoundland and Labrador recognize that modern and efficient roadways are crucial to encouraging and supporting economic activity, facilitating trade, and creating well-paying, middle class jobs.

Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced approximately $64.5 million in eligible funding to improve a section of the Trans Labrador Highway.

The Government of Canada is contributing up to $31.8 million to this project through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National Regional Projects. The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador will cover the remainder of project funding.

The project includes widening and paving 126 kilometres of road from 160 km East of Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Cartwright Junction. These improvements will not only mean safer and more efficient travel for commuters, it will also contribute to Labrador's economic growth as the Trans Labrador Highway is the sole highway and primary public road in the region.

In addition, the communities of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Hopedale will benefit from up to $1.8 million in joint funding through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – Small Communities Fund. Read the backgrounder for details.

Joint federal-provincial-municipal will support two infrastructure projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.
