GEORGETOWN, On, Nov. 2, 2012 /CNW/ - An investment by the Harper Government will help create a new local community space for Georgetown while commemorating the town's military history. Support for Georgetown Globe Productions was announced today by the Honourable Michael Chong, Member of Parliament (Wellington-Halton Hills), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
The Old Armoury is currently being used by Georgetown Globe Productions as a rehearsal hall. This funding will allow the building's interior and exterior to be upgraded to ensure that the Old Armoury is accessible, allowing for increased use by the local community for arts and heritage activities. To honour the 100th anniversary of the 1914 deployment of troops trained at the Armoury for engagement in the First World War, a permanent sculpture commemorating this event will also be installed.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous and free country we are today."
"Renovating the Old Armoury is a very fitting way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Canada's engagement in the First World War. The contributions of our brave troops deserve never to be forgotten," said Mr. Chong. "Residents can be proud of this project, which will provide a vibrant meeting place for people involved in arts, culture, and heritage, and also create a lasting reminder of Georgetown's contribution to our country's war effort."
"Georgetown Globe Productions is so appreciative of the funding, which will allow us to honour our local boys who drilled in this facility while preparing to defend our country in WW1," said Lois Fraser, President of Georgetown Globe Productions. "The Old Armoury, built in 1866, is a lasting reminder of our history. With your assistance, we are remembering our past, and at the same time creating a wonderful gathering place for our community."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $92,236 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
