SOUTHAMPTON, ON, Aug. 10, 2012 /CNW/ - An investment in Bruce County's history, art and Aboriginal heritage will showcase newly discovered artifacts, promote tourism, and stimulate the local economy. Support for the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, a museum owned and operated by the Corporation of the County of Bruce, was announced today by Ben Lobb, Member of Parliament (Huron-Bruce), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
This funding will enable the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre to enhance its existing storage premises to support the preservation of the area's cultural heritage, including Aboriginal artifacts found at local archaeological sites. Once the project is complete, the museum's collections storage capacity will double in size.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous and free country we are today."
"I am pleased to announce the Government of Canada's support of the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre," said Mr. Lobb. "This project will make the museum's exhibitions and activities more accessible to the public and contribute to the preservation of Bruce County's cultural heritage."
"The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre has a very unique and rare collection of artifacts," said Barbara Ribey, Director of the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre. "The funding received from the Government of Canada will allow us to make these rare artifacts accessible to researchers and to future generations and will help us fulfill our mandate to present and preserve Canadian and Aboriginal history."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $11,300 through the Museums Assistance Program. This program of the Department of Canadian Heritage provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
