MARKHAM, ON, April 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Arts and culture organizations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will continue to create jobs and growth, boost tourism, and attract visitors from around the world, thanks to investments from the Government of Canada. The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, alongside representatives from the cultural community, announced today support for 111 arts, culture, heritage, and official-language projects across the GTA.
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in projects that are important to Canada's cultural identity and integral to its heritage," said Minister Moore. "By supporting arts and cultural projects in the Greater Toronto Area, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and provide better access to the arts."
Supporting Canadian culture means supporting Canada's economy, as arts and culture represents $46 billion in the Canadian economy and over 630,000 jobs. Arts, culture and official language organizations contribute to the cultural vitality of communities and enrich the quality of life of all Canadians. The funding announced today supports a wide range of organizations across the GTA, including Le Théâtre français de Toronto, the Toronto Dance Foundation, the Markham Jazz Festival, Soundstreams Canada, and the Canadian Opera Company.
"As Soundstreams enters its 30th season, we are keenly aware that the ongoing support of the Government of Canada—who was with us from the beginning—has contributed significantly to our growth and success," said Chris Lorway, Executive Director of Soundstreams Canada.
The Government of Canada has provided total funding of $20,209,843 through 10 programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Museums Assistance Program, the Canada Arts Training Fund, the Canada Music Fund, the Canada Interactive Fund, the Canada Book Fund, the Canadian Studies Program, and the Enhancement of Official Languages Program. For more information about the projects, see the attached backgrounder.
