CHARLOTTETOWN, Aug. 21, 2012 /CNW/ - A new investment by the Government of Canada will enable museums across the province to better serve their visitors. This was announced today by the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament (Egmont), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
Funding will support the Community Museums Association of Prince Edward Island in carrying out an extensive project to provide professional development and staff training in the latest museum technology and management practices. Activities include workshops in interpretation, new technologies, exhibition design, collections management, museum storage, and computer literacy. Work is already underway and the project will run until March 2013.
"This year marks the start of the five-year countdown to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017," said Minister Moore. "Our Government is proud to invest in projects that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians. On the road to 2017, let us continue to celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, prosperous, and free country we are today."
"This partnership with the Community Museums Association of Prince Edward Island is definitely a win-win; it's good for all of us," said Minister Shea. "Such an extensive training program, especially with its emphasis on community museum computer literacy, will greatly benefit museum staff in telling the story of the Island and in keeping our rich history alive. This, in turn, will benefit visitors as they learn even more about our region's many vibrant communities."
"The Community Museums Association of Prince Edward Island is grateful for the assistance received from the Government of Canada, which will allow us to fulfill an important task: offering training and supporting workers in the province's community museums," said David Panton, President of the Association. "This support will help ensure the protection of rich collections that our museums are committed to preserving for future generations."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $30,000 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
