EDMUNDSTON, NB, April 19, 2012 /CNW/ - The Salon du livre d'Edmundston will continue to promote Canadian and Acadian books and authors, thanks to support from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) (La Francophonie), on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
The investment will support the 28th edition of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston, which will be held April 4 to 7, 2013, at the Cité des Jeunes A.-M. Sormany secondary school. This literary gathering will showcase Canadian and Acadian authors and their works in a program of activities including interviews, round tables, and lectures, as well as author workshops in elementary and secondary schools. The book fair will feature more than 50 authors and 250 publishers and will attract approximately 10,000 visitors.
"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in important projects like the Salon du livre d'Edmundston," said Minister Moore. "By supporting this initiative, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our economy and support local arts, culture, and heritage."
"Literary gatherings such as the Salon du livre d'Edmundston foster new discoveries and exchanges," added Minister of State Valcourt. "We are delighted to support the 28th Salon du livre d'Edmundston, which once again will offer local residents and visitors a memorable literary experience."
"The steering committee of the Salon du livre d'Edmundston gratefully acknowledges the support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Book Fund," said Mélanie Hachey, Chair of the Salon. "This investment allows us to bring residents of northwestern New Brunswick together with authors from the Francophonie for some unique and memorable encounters."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $20,450 through the Support for Organizations component of the Canada Book Fund. The principal objective of the Fund is to ensure access to a diverse range of Canadian-authored books in Canada and abroad. It seeks to achieve this objective by fostering a viable Canadian book industry that publishes and markets Canadian-authored books.
