MARKHAM, ON, Oct. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), Paul Calandra, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament (Oak Ridges-Markham), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Table Tennis Canada to host the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Junior and Cadet Open. The event is being held October 2 to 6, 2012, in Markham, Ontario.
"The Government of Canada is proud to support Table Tennis Canada and the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Junior and Cadet Open," said Minister of State Gosal. "Supporting tournaments like this is just one way that our Government provides opportunities for our developing athletes to gain international experience and continue their pursuit of excellence."
"Hosting international sport events such as the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Junior and Cadet Open offers an opportunity for our athletes to compete against some of the best in the world and brings a welcome boost to the local economy," said Mr. Calandra. "I congratulate the organizers and the volunteers from our community for welcoming the world to this region."
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. Funding of $35,000 has been provided for this event through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. In 2012-2013, Table Tennis Canada will receive $563,000 from Sport Canada's Sport Support Program.
