MONTRÉAL, March 7, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry and Minister of State (Agriculture), on behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Gymastics Canada in support of L'International Gymnix 2012.
"The Government of Canada is proud to back our athletes and give them opportunities to compete against international athletes here at home," said Minister of State Gosal. "Hosting events like L'International Gymnix 2012 not only brings an economic boost to the region but provides another opportunity for our athletes to compete against the world's best on the road to London 2012."
"This is the 21st edition of L'International Gymnix, and its huge success would not be possible without the dedication of hundreds of community volunteers," said Minister Paradis. "I thank the Gymnix club and the organizers for their efforts, and I wish all participants an enjoyable meet."
L'International Gymnix was first organized in 1991, with the goal of giving Canadian gymnasts an opportunity to perform in front of their home crowd, while gaining international experience. Over the years, it has grown to become the biggest international gymnastics competition held in Canada.
"In allowing our athletes to compete with the world's best in front of their fans, L'Internationale Gymnix offers an experience that we think is invaluable," said Jean-Paul Caron, President and CEO of Gymnastics Canada. "The financial support of a partner such as the Government of Canada is critical to the success of this event."
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Gymnastics Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada also committed $2,600,000 in 2011-2012 to Gymnastics Canada through the Sport Support Program.
