TORONTO, Aug. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Labour, on behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced funding for KidSport Canada that will provide more children with the opportunity to participate in sport.
The announcement was made at the Playground Games, an event organized by KidSport Canada and the Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association to promote sport among children in high-risk neighbourhoods.
"Our Government is committed to working together with the sport community to ensure that our kids have the chance to take part in organized sport and physical recreation activities," said Minister Gosal. "Encouraging a love for sport at an early age plays a key role in the development of our high-performance podium heroes of tomorrow."
"As a parent, I recognize the important role sport plays in our kids' lives- both physically and socially," said Minister Raitt. "Today I was pleased to announce funding that goes directly to the delivery of programs to get our kids moving. I congratulate KidSport Canada and its partners for the great role they play in promoting healthy communities across our country."
KidSport Canada is a national not-for-profit organization that provides financial support to children facing financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport. Working directly with local sport clubs and organizations across the country, KidSport Canada helps cover registration and equipment costs to allow children to participate in a season of sports like baseball, hockey, or ringette.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from playground to podium. A contribution of $200,700 is being provided to KidSport Canada for projects in 2012-2013 through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program.
