OTTAWA, Sept. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Thierry Mesana, Cardiac Surgeon and former Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery, as its new President and CEO. Appointed for a 5-year mandate, Dr. Mesana becomes the Institute's third CEO, succeeding Dr. Robert Roberts and Dr. Wilbert Keon. His mandate will begin on April 1st, 2014.
"Thierry Mesana is an internationally recognized cardiac surgeon. He is also a remarkable leader who has contributed immensely to the Institute's growth and success over the last 12 years. We are confident that he will be a very capable CEO and that our Institute will continue to shine worldwide under his leadership," said Lawrence Soloway, Chair of the Heart Institute's Board of Directors. "The Board also wants to thank Dr. Robert Roberts for his exceptional and relentless commitment to bringing the Heart Institute to new heights. Dr. Roberts is a gifted researcher and cardiologist."
Dr. Thierry Mesana received his medical degree at the Université de la Méditerranée, Marseille, France, where he trained in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. He received his PhD in biophysics from the same Institution after extensive experimental work on artificial heart and ventricular assist devices.
Dr. Mesana was a Visiting Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1996 to 1997. He worked as a full Professor of Cardiac Surgery and acted as Chair of Adult Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Marseille, France, between 1999 and 2001, after which he was appointed Chief of Cardiac Surgery at UOHI.
At the Heart Institute, Dr. Mesana led significant changes in the Division of Cardiac Surgery, including the clinical development of mitral valve repair and aortic root repair, and the enhancement of the beating-heart coronary-bypass surgery program. He is now chairing the Transplant and Devices Committee.
Dr. Mesana is certified by the European Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the French College of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
"It is with pride, but also with modesty that I accept the new role of President and CEO of the Heart Institute. We often hear about how unique and world-renowned we are, but it is your nurse, your physician, the researcher who discovers new drugs, and all our support staff, that makes us who we are. Over the next few years, we will continue to grow, but we will do so while keeping in mind who makes the Heart Institute so intelligibly distinctive.
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute's staff works closely together in delivering the highest quality of patient care. This dedicated focus encompasses families as an integral component of patients' health care. Multidisciplinary teams, whose members are experts in their fields and at the forefront of medical and technical advances, carry out specialized care, teaching and research.
