Canadians are invited to try all four flavours and vote for the yummiest from August 11 to September 30
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 5, 2015 /CNW/ - Potato chip lovers from coast to coast were inspired by their favourite foods and the Canadian regions that remind them of their yummiest flavour experiences. After receiving almost 950,000 flavour submissions, Lay's Canada is excited to reveal the four finalist flavours for this year's Do Us a Flavour Tastes of Canada contest:
It's now up to Canadians to choose the winning flavour by trying all four and voting for the yummiest from August 11 until September 30. Canadians can vote once per day on each of the following platforms:
Voting hashtags for Twitter and Instagram are: #VoteCowboyBBQBeans, #VoteButterChicken, #VoteMontrealSmokedMeat and #VotePEIScallopedPotatoes.
The flavour finalist that garners the most votes will win the $50,000 grand prize plus one per cent of their flavour's future sales once the voting period ends.
"The flavour submissions not only reflected the diverse tastes, but also the diverse regions across our fantastic country," says Susan Irving, Senior Director of Marketing – Core Brands, PepsiCo Food Canada. "Selecting our four Do Us a Flavour finalists was not an easy task. The challenge that lies ahead for them now is to win over the taste buds and votes of potato chip fans across Canada. As voting kicks off, I encourage all Canadians to try all four flavours and vote for the yummiest – I'm excited to see which flavour they choose!"
Canadians will have to act fast if they want to try all four finalist flavours – they will be available nationwide in early August for a limited time only. The next great Lay's potato chip flavour will be announced and available across Canada in late November.
So what's the inspiration behind the four flavours anyway? Let's fill you in!
Inspired by Western Canada: Cowboy BBQ Beans on Lay's Wavy: Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta for Brenda Boghean heading to the rodeo is a tradition. One of her favourite parts of the festival is the delicious food. Beans, slow-cooked in BBQ sauce, served alongside her favourite cut of beef is the quintessential rodeo dish and really captures the essence of cowboy culture.
Inspired by Ontario: Butter Chicken on Lay's Original: Darryl Francispillai, from Mississauga, Ontario, was inspired by his South Asian heritage and love of Indian food for his Butter Chicken Flavour. It's one of his favourite dishes and a nod to multiculturalism!
Inspired by Quebec: Montreal Smoked Meat on Lay's Original: Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches are emblematic of their namesake city's cuisine. Zdravko Gunjevic from Waterloo, Ontario was inspired to create the flavour because it's such a delicious dish that not only can you order them in delis throughout Quebec but throughout Canada and around the world too!
Inspired by Atlantic Canada: PEI Scalloped Potatoes on Lay's Original: Inspired by Atlantic Canada's reputation for potato cultivation, one of Burlington, Ontario's Jordan Cairns' fondest memories of growing up was when he sat down to big family dinners on Friday nights and holidays. His favourite side dish at these meals was always the freshly baked, rich and cheesy scalloped potatoes.
The Lay's Do Us a Flavour contest has been held in numerous countries around the world and has generated an incredible response with millions of flavour submissions. Since 2013, the Canadian contest has received more than 2.7 million flavour ideas from fans across the country. From the UK to India, Australia to South Africa and most recently the US, the Do Us a Flavour campaign has resulted in a wide spectrum of chip flavour ideas created by consumers including Pulled Pork (UK), Hamburguesa (Argentina), Mastana Mango (India), Walkie Talkie Chicken (South Africa) and Wasabi Ginger on Lay's Kettle Cooked (US).
