TORONTO, Dec. 22, 2015 /CNW/ - As the temperature begins to drop and people head outdoors for winter sports and activities, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) wants to remind everyone to make safety a priority.
"While you're enjoying the outdoors this holiday season and throughout the winter, please practice extra caution, especially near our hydroelectric facilities," says Mike Martelli, Senior Vice President of OPG's Hydro Thermal Operations. "Even in the winter months, water levels around our stations constantly rise and fall, meaning these areas are not safe for recreational use."
Near our stations and dams, ice that appears stable can actually be thin and weak. When taking part in outdoor winter activities such as ice fishing, snowmobiling, or a good old game of pick-up hockey, please practice caution and stay clear of dams and hydroelectric facilities. Keep an eye out for warning signs, and respect the barriers and fences that have been put in place for your protection.
"At OPG, safety is our number one priority," adds Martelli. "While you're out enjoying the winter season, please make safety your priority as well."
