OTTAWA, April 23, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce In Japan and Keidanren, is holding a Canada-Japan Trade Symposium on April 25 to discuss the proposed Canada-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). With the second round of negotiations taking place in Ottawa this week, this event is a timely opportunity to explore the potential gains and challenges of such an agreement.
Canada and Japan have a deep and longstanding trade and investment relationship, but we can do more together. According to a joint-study completed by the two governments, an EPA with Japan would boost Canadian exports to Japan by 67 per cent and increase Canadian GDP by US$3.8 billion.
Although we have entered the Trans Pacific Partnership talks, we cannot estimate how long that process will take. An interim agreement with Japan—becoming the only G8 country to have done so—would significantly strengthen our situation, while sending a clear signal to all our trade partners about Canada's ambitions.
