Media Advisory - AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde will Attend Toronto Court Hearing to Support Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador in Legal Fight Against Chevron Français
TORONTO, April 17, 2018 /CNW/ - Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Perry Bellegarde will be at the Ontario Court of Appeal in Toronto on April 18 to support Indigenous peoples from Ecuador in their ongoing legal battle against Chevron (Yaiguaje v. Chevron Corporation). Indigenous peoples in Ecuador have turned to the Canadian courts system in their legal fight to recoup a $9.5 billion judgment (now $12 billion with interest) in their favour for environmental damages in their traditional territories caused by Chevron.

The hearing takes place April 17 & 18. The Assembly of First Nations signed a protocol agreement with Indigenous representatives from Ecuador to support them in this legal action in December, 2017, at the AFN Special Chiefs Assembly.
