CPP and inter-provincial trade are key issues for small business, should be for premiers

TORONTO, July 20, 2016 /CNW/ - Senior officials from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) will be available to comment on various important issues being discussed by Canada's premiers this week at the Council of the Federation meeting in Whitehorse.

Last week, CFIB sent a letter to premiers, urging them to:

• Delay a final decision on expanding the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) until December, as promised in the federal budget, to allow provinces time to consult with Canadians.
• Deliver a modern, simple and effective Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) that would make it easier for small businesses to buy, sell, ship and hire between provinces.
• Dedicate an upcoming Council of the Federation meeting to discussing how to strengthen Canada's economy, with a particular focus on small business.

"With a sluggish economy, small business owners are looking for our premiers to put forward policies that support a healthy business climate," said CFIB executive vice-president Laura Jones. "The Agreement on Internal Trade and the hastily-planned deal to expand CPP are at opposite ends of that spectrum. We'd like to see one come and one go."

CFIB is Canada's largest association of small- and medium-sized businesses with 109,000 members across every sector and region.
