TORONTO, June 20, 2014 /CNW/ - Following media reports that the federal government will announce changes later today to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) will be available immediately following the announcement (expected at 1:30 pm EST) for comment.
"Thousands of small businesses that are unable to attract a sufficient number of Canadian workers rely on the Temporary Foreign Worker Program as a critical lifeline that helps them keep the doors open," said CFIB president Dan Kelly. "If the program is closed off to these businesses that use it appropriately, that could lead to business closures and job losses for Canadian workers."
"Small businesses support changes to address misuse of the program, while addressing the very real labour shortages being experienced in certain sectors and certain parts of the country," continued Kelly. "We are hopeful that this will be the focus of today's changes."
CFIB is Canada's largest association of small and medium-sized businesses with 109,000 members across every sector and region.
